Ministry of Education Names Facilitator in DSBN ARC Review

Siobhan Morris, 610 CKTB
October 29, 2008

A step forward in the Ministry of Education's look at the District School Board of Niagara's Accommodations Review Committee.

The ARC recommended closing Niagara on the Lake's only high school.

In the spring, DSBN trustees ruled, Niagara District Secondary School would stay open, provided it boosted enrolment to 350 by October 31, 2009.

Joanne Hicks with Friends of NDSS tells CKTB the ministry has now appointed the facilitator in their review.

Hicks received word from the ministry Wednesday via email.

Facilitator Joan Green will travel to Niagara for a consultation, the week of November 17th.

The ministry says the review will take place over two or three days.

Hicks launched the petition for a ministry review in September.

As a member of the Accommodations Review Committee , Hicks does not feel the process was far.

She cannot understand why Niagara District was not reviewed alongside other high schools in their cluster: Laura Secord, Lakeport and Eden.

Green is expected to deliver her report within a month of the consultation process, likely in mid to late December.
